Bio

Originally from the South Bay Area, California, Simone Temple (they/them) is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Their research lies at the intersection of  Black girlhood, trans childhood, and Black trans studies and seeks to explore how Black trans and gender nonconforming push, break, and bend the gendered boundaries of Blackness, girlhood, and transness through linguistic and aesthetic practices.

As an artist known as The Editorial Academic Simone’s artistic work uses makeup as medium, transforming their face into a canvas to create looks that redefine “safe for work” makeup. Their work challenges traditional ideas of professionalism and highlights how aesthetic practices can be acts of resistance and survival in academic spaces.
