Course Description
This seminar will evaluate contemporary film in relation to Black histories of protest and resistance. We will consider historical documents, scholarly articles, and resistance movements from slavery to the Black Lives Matter Movement in order to understand the meaning of Black protest both cinematically and through lived experience. Particular attention will be paid to Black queer and feminist directors and theories.
Course Materials
We will watch a significant number of films, mostly from the beginning of the BLM Movement forward. Most of the film viewing will be available through standard streaming services like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu or HBO Max. There will also be required reading of articles and book chapters.
