About the Film

The Takeover chronicles the historic actions of the Black Student Union at UC Santa Barbara, whose activism played a pivotal role in the creation of one of the nation’s most respected Black Studies departments. The documentary captures the intensity and strategy behind their movement—featuring elements of civil disobedience, negotiation, resistance, police violence, and ultimately, a hard-fought victory.

With in-depth interviews and rare archival footage, the film revisits this critical chapter in the Black Power era and explores its lasting significance through a modern lens.
